PRESS STATEMENT BY Chungwa Moja - ODM NEED FOR TOLERANCE AND SOBRIETY ON THE REFERENDUM ISSUE We would like to appeal to all Kenyans to respect the constitutional right of every Kenyan to pursue their political preferences in public peacefully. This is extremely important at this time when there are debates and campaigns regarding the Referendum. What happened in Nandi County yesterday is barbaric, shameful and intolerable. We condemn it unreservedly and call upon the United Republican Party (URP) leaders to desist from provoking and intimidating Governor Dr. Cleophas Lagat and his County Government the way they have been doing. The Governor just like every other Kenyan has all the rights under the constitution to express his views on matters he feels are beneficial not only for his county but for the whole country. Such politics of intolerance can only lead to ugly blood-letting scenes that led to the vicious attack on the Nandi County Chief of Staff by URP goons. URP leadership needs to apologize to the Kenyan people while ensuring that it observes proper political etiquette required in a democratic and civilized society that Kenyans aspire to. We also wish to condemn the primitive tactics being displayed by the Governor of Nakuru County Mr. Kinuthia Mbugua regarding the push for the plebiscite. The confiscation of Okoa Kenya signature booklets from registration clerks in Nakuru town by County Askaris is not only criminal but draconian. We wish to remind Mr. Mbugua that this is a new era and that his style of administration, that of intimidation and oppressiveness which he adopted while serving in the provincial administration is not welcome in the present dispensation. In the meantime let it be known by all and sundry that the referendum train left the station many weeks ago. It is better for those still in doubt to jump on board than engage in the wasteful effort of trying to derail the train from behind. That is simply an exercise in futility.
