The support will be channeled through the Bank’s agencies that promote Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) to emerging economies. The pledge to that end was voiced yesterday in Dar es Salaam by Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (MIGA) Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, Michel Wormser when briefing journalists on his two day visit to Tanzania. According to a communiqué released yesterday, the funds are a result of an agreement signed by DANIDA and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) on August 26, this year. The statement noted that the agreement was aimed to strengthen credibility and capacity of key institutions of democracy in Tanzania to effectively execute their election and political functions. The statement said that democratic projects will now be able to execute their election activities smoothly, accurately, precisely and transparently. It further explained that the contribution would allow the project to increase its efforts in promoting voters’ education and multi stakeholder platform for dialogue. The multi donor joint initiative to support free, credible and peaceful elections was initially launched on March, 2013 jointly by UNDP and the government of the United Republic of Tanzania. Steen Sonne Andersen, Deputy Head of Mission stressed that democratization and promotion of a good governance is in the heart of Danish development policies. He further said that he is happy that Denmark is supporting UNDP’s democratic empowerment project to strengthen democratic participation of all Tanzanians ahead of the next general election in 2015. (The Guardian, Nipashe, et al) Protect border beacons, Kikwete urges Tanzanians President Jakaya Kikwete has called upon Tanzanians living in the country’s border areas to protect and maintain beacons that partition her from its neighbours. He said that the purpose of the landmarks is not to segregate Tanzanians from their friends and relatives in neighbouring countries, but to create a conducive and convenient way of enabling people in the respective countries to interact freely and legally in business and other social activities. The president made the call here yesterday when he was addressing a public rally that was followed by the start of an exercise to survey and map landmarks between Tanzania and Burundi. The exercise was held at Mugikomelo that borders Tanzania and Burundi on Ngara side in Kagera Region. President Kikwete said that, while verifying the country’s border is going on, some Tanzanians living along the border with Burundi were worried. He said they think that the aim of installing beacons on the border lines is a move by the government to segregate them from their friends and relatives in Burundi.
