PRIME MINISTER HAS HECTIC SUNDAY IN DC PRIOR TO ENERGY SUMMIT WASHINGTON, D.C. (Jan. 26) -- With the weather forecast predicting that a massive snow storm would reach Washington, D.C., area late Sunday night, Prime Minister Perry Christie and a ministerial delegation that includes Minister of Foreign Affairs and Immigration Fred Mitchell and Minister of the Environment and Housing Kenred Dorsett arrived in D.C. Sunday morning for the inaugural Caribbean Energy Summit hosted by United States Vice President Joseph Biden on Monday. Fortunately, probably in deference to a Prime Minister from a country where the temperature seldom drops below 60 degrees, the snow storm did not develop as predicted. Also accompanying the Prime Minister are Mr. Philip A. Turner, Under Secretary in the Office of the Prime Minister, and Mr. Charles Walkine, Foreign Affairs Officer, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Immigration. Shortly he settled into the hotel, Prime Minister Christie, who is chairman of CARICOM and was scheduled to deliver the policy position of both CARICOM and The Bahamas at the energy summit, and members of his delegation received a more than one-hour briefing from His Excellency Dr. Eugene Newry, Bahamas Ambassador to the United States, and Mr. Chet Neymour, Deputy Chief of Mission at the Bahamas Embassy, aimed at providing an update on bilateral and multilateral matters in which the diplomatic matters were engaged. Also participating in the briefing meeting, held in the hotel’s Dogwood Room, were Mrs. Paulette Zonicle, Bahamas Consul General to Washington, D.C.; Miss Krissy Hanna, Second Secretary, Bahamas Embassy; and Mr. Mikhail Bullard, Third Secretary, Bahamas Embassy. Later that afternoon, Prime Minister Chiristie, Minister Mitchell, Minister Dorsett and other members of the delegation attended a reception held at the Aztec Patio of the Organization of American States (OAS) main building for young Bahamian professionals working in the D.C. area and Bahamian students attending universities in the area. Both the Prime Minister and Minister Mitchell delivered brief addresses and Minister Mitchell also used the occasion to officially launch the Bahamas Embassy’s new website, which was highlighted on a screen set up in the reception area. The Prime Minister and Mr. Mitchell later attended a reception at Blair House, the official state guest house for the President of the United States, which was one of the activities related to the energy summit. The Prime Minister resumed his hectic schedule Sunday evening with a two-hour-long meeting in the OAS Hall of the Americas with other heads of delegations who are in D.C. for the energy summit to formulate a common perspective for his summit address. --30— CAPTION Shortly he settled into the hotel on his arrival in Washington, D.C., Prime Minister Perry Christie and his delegation received a more than one-hour briefing from His Excellency Dr. Eugene Newry, Bahamas Ambassador to the United States, and Mr. Chet Neymour, Deputy Chief of Mission at the Bahamas Embassy, aimed at providing an update on bilateral and multilateral matters in which the Embassy’s diplomatic team is engaged.
