PRINCIPLES & JUSTIFICATIONS = THE KAUPAPA OF MAURU O HAURAKI • INCLUSIVENESS - A process that omits some people in preference to others is not inclusive, but selective and consequentially extremely damaging, not only to those oppressed and ignored in their experience of colonization and then modern politics but also for the standing of the Hauraki people overall as they seek to rebuild their world in the future. We cannot follow in the footsteps of our colonizing oppressors. • COMPLEMENTARITY - A process that complements and enhances the progress of Hauraki mandating and negotiation, is for the benefit of all. The kaupapa of Maurū o Hauraki is to complement and enhance the existing work and thus create even better and more robust outcomes. Our collaboration will complement the Hauraki Collective ensuring that those claimants and Whanui who have been excluded are given meaningful voice. • ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF TENSION, CONFLICT & DISPUTES – Progress can only be made when these challenges are acknowledged and understood openly and respectfully. Courage, not political power or domination is needed, since to choose the latter is to ignore the issues which will not go away and become even more detrimental to the Hauraki people. Untruths and inaccuracies need to be rectified. • CONTEMPORARY SOLUTIONS FOR CONTEMPORARY CHALLENGES – Recognition that this process reflects the past, present and future. Combining all these threads will enable us to grow and keep pace with the demands of our local and regional economies, political, business, public sector and social entities. Maurū o Hauraki seeks to combine all these threads for growth and introduces capable and enthusiastic new leaders to the table who are positive role models for their people. • UNDERSTANDING EACH OTHER – The kaupapa of Maurū o Hauraki ensures that we know each other well, including out identities, history, claims, social and current entities and experiences; this has enabled our progress and collaboration. We encourage that in the Hauraki Collective. • IDENTITY - We know who we are; this does not need litigation or re-litigation, it needs respect. The kaupapa of Maurū o Hauraki is a respect and strength in our history and whakapapa and that of others. Maurū o Hauraki brings diverse and rich history and whakapapa to the process that has previously been denied through the constructions and activities of the Native Land Court, and the policy and legislation that underpinned the formation of the Hauraki Maori Trust Board and then subsequently the Hauraki Collective.
