PROMOTION OF RURAL SPORTS FOR NATIONAL INTEGRATION-2013 Yangang South Sikkim Hem Gurung Yangang 27th August: The Vice Chancellor of Sikkim University Dr. T.B. Subba, Chief Guest of the program, today inaugurated the opening ceremony of the Inter Gram Vikash Kendra (GVKs) Rural Sports Meet 2013 held at Yangang Government Senior Secondary School playground organized by the South District Zilla Panchayat Namchi with the Sports & Youth Affairs Department and other Line Departments. This Rural Sports meet is organized with the objective to promote rural sports for National Integration and also to offer platform to the aspirants of rural areas in the field of sports and was participated by the 8 Gram Vikash Kendras (GVKs) of South District, Police Training Centre Yangang and Guest Participants of Ministry of HRD Education Department New Delhi. This three days event which started today will conclude on 29th August 2013. Other than the sports events, band display by South Point School Rabongla, cultural dance and songs by local groups and school children were presented. The Vice Chancellor was accompanied by RMDD Minister Mr CB Karki also the area MLA and Chief Patron of the Rural Sports Meet as the guest of honor and Barfung-Rabong MLA Mr Sonam Gyatso Bhutia, Zilla Upadhakshya East Ms Kalpana Moktan, Chairpersons and other official dignitaries. In the competitive discipline Table Tennis, Volleyball, Badminton, Chess, Carrom, High Jump, Long Jump, Shot Put and Rock Climbing are the main events. The finale of all sports will be held on 29th August wherein Mr Ugyen Gyatso Chief Whip is expected to be the Chief Guest for closing ceremony and Mr NK Pradhan HRDD Minister is expected for 28th August as the Chief Guest. The sports meet was declared open by the Chief Guest after hoisting the event flag which was followed by welcome address by SDZP Adhakshya Mr CL Gurung and cultural presentation. Later the Chief Guest accompanied by the other guests and officials visited the indoor games venues and met the participants. Informing the public about the various development activities of the State Government, Mr CB Karki highlighted about the objective of the rural sports meet saying that it is held to promote the sentiment of National Integration amongst the people and secondly to fulfill the State Government’s Mission of Human Resource Development in all aspects. He added since sports sector is a growing industry, it is an advantageous sector for the youth to flourish. He further went to inform that 11 boys have been recruited by the Air Force India in the football discipline from Sikkim and one of them has also obtained opportunity to join an international club. Citing the example of local football legend, Bahichung Bhutia former captain of Indian Football Team, he said that Sikkim is well known for football discipline and the Government strives to bring out more talented footballers like Bhaichung by providing them these kind of opportunities. He asked the Panchayats to construct playgrounds in their respective wards to facilitate sports events for the rural youth. Addressing the students, he informed them about the higher level education facilities provided by the government and asked them to keep a focused mind to achieve their dreams. He also informed that he has personally helped number of local youth of Yangang to pursue higher education outside the state based on their merit and hard work. He asked the students to empower themselves by studying well specially in science subjects to avail the job prospect which will be created after the construction of the multi specialty Government hospital in Gangtok. The Chief Guest Dr Subba in his address expressed happiness to be in Yangang and shared that himself hailing from a remote village in Darjeeling, he found himself at home here. Comparing to the earlier times when opportunities were scarce for the youth, he said that the youth of today are fortunate to get this opportunity to participate in all kinds of sports and asked them to grab the chance to enhance their talent and even pursue their career in respective discipline. Talking about the Sikkim University coming up in Yangang, he said that 90% of land formalities have been completed and remaining 10% would also complete soon and then the construction of the university would begin here which will usher in opportunities for Yangang while sports meet will be a regular event after the commencement of the university added Dr Subba. Concluding his speech he extended gratitude towards the State Government and the Zilla Panchayat for bestowing honor upon him.
