PROVIDENCE ANCHORS ADDED TO ABA 2014 EXPANSION TEAMS Indianapolis, IN. The American Basketball Association (ABA) abalive today announced that it has added the Providence Anchors to its growing list of 2014 expansion teams. “We’re very excited to have Providence Anchors as part of the ABA,” stated Joe Newman, ABA CEO. “We have always felt that Providence could be a great ABA basketball city. Providence Anchors Basketball is a team dedicated to using basketball as a tool to build confidence and moral character based on sports principles. Our team was created solely with the intention to provide a quality sporting events for the Rhode Island community and the competitors, and to introduce professional basketball to this exceptional state. In addition to the Providence Anchors providing entertainment on the court, our athletes will be directly involved in both rural and local communities’ development programs and activities. Anchors basketball programs will include Fast-break to Reading with the (IRA) International Reading Association, nutrition awareness, physical fitness training, and other public appearances to promote sports and encourage involvement within the communities. The original ABA was founded in 1967, competing with the well established National Basketball Association, until the ABA-NBA merger in 1976. According to The NBA Encyclopedia, its long-term goal was to force a merger with the more established league. ABA officials told potential owners that they could get an ABA team for half of what it cost to get an NBA expansion team at the time. When the merger occurred, ABA officials said, their investment would more than double. Ultimately, four ABA teams were absorbed into the older league: the New York Nets, Denver Nuggets, Indiana Pacers and San Antonio Spurs. “We pledge to make the Anchors’ organization “world class organization,” added Owner Shabazz. “We are going to create a first-rate fan experience while putting together a team of which Rhode Island sports fans will be proud; on and off the court…our goal is to provide a comprehensive transformation of the team and to secure its place as a leader in the Providence community. We are very excited to be a part of the ABA.” For more information, visit providenceanchors or email info@providenceanchors or call 401-578-9934 or visit abalive. Thanks.
