PSA Part 2. Why most DJs will not burn a CD for you to play at a party It is ILLEGAL....or at least IMPRACTICAL to do it LEGALLY. People may ask, well how is it you play in the club, or at a wedding? Simple...A venue which utilizes DJ services has paid BMI/ASCAP for the rights to have music played at its establishment. When the event is at a private residence, the client is not subject to those rules. “ASCAP does not license DJs. It is the venue, establishment, or promoter of an event that is responsible for public performance licensing, not the performer. Private events such as weddings, etc. are exempt from licensing.” - Bryn Caryl, ASCAP Yeah I know... What about the CDs for sale on the corner? They are ILLEGAL.... Its someones hustle, and I never knock someones hustle, but I am in the DJ BUSINESS, and most DJs in the DJ business, wont risk it. The legal way to do produce a mix tape for sale to and use by a client is to secure the rights to the music via the appropriate licencing entity, pay for it, and build that cost into the amount charged for the final product. That said, the mix tape costs more than if a client booked the DJ, and you still dont have professional grade equipment, lighting, an emcee, or the other services that a Professional DJ provides. This is different from a promotional use mix tape that you may purchase. It will be watermarked by the DJ with drops of his DJ name throughout the tape. In conclusion.... If you just need some music played at your event, rent the equipment (minimum cost for small pro rental sound $300), or use your home stereo (thats meant to be a joke), download your music from I tunes ($1.29 per song X 60 songs for 4 hours no mix $77.40), and get Uncle Rodney to emcee (Priceless). Keep in mind that you have to pick the rental system up, set it up, break it down, and return it. OR Hire the DJ to take care of your musical entertainment, and know that $500 is a deal you should take before the DJ realizes he under quoted the price. ohnewsday/news/34972-deputies-man-was-selling-counterfeit-dvds-in-front-of-courthouse.html#sthash.fJLjyJBc.dpuf
