PSAM welcomes the adoption of a revised code of ethics which seeks to further prevent Members of Parliament (MP’s) and their spouses or dependants from doing business with the state. The PSAM has observed how in previous years a considerable number of MP’s failed to make their annual declarations on time despite receiving extended deadlines to comply with the codes obligations in this regard. The PSAM has also expressed concern with the slap on the wrist “sanctions” imposed by Parliament on MPs who have repeatedly failed to declare on time. The PSAM shall be monitoring how many MP’s comply with the 1 November 2014 deadline and shall call upon the Joint Committee on Ethics and Members Interests to recommend harsher deterrent sanctions should MP’s breach the codes revised obligations.
