PUBLIC LECTURE SERIES | 23 May 2014 CATCOS: Re-establishing Long-term Glacier Monitoring in Kyrgyzstan, Central Asia Speaker: Marlene KronenbergDate: 23 May 2014, 4.00 pm Venue: University of Central Asia (UCA), 138 Toktogul Street, Bishkek, Kyrgyz Republic,2nd Floor Conference Room. Abstract The lecture explores the methodology and results of glacier monitoring in Central Asia conducted by the Capacity Building and Twinning for Climate Observing Systems (CATCOS) project, which aims to improve climate relevant measurements in data sparse regions. This lecture by Marlene Kronenberg will describe the methodology and results of monitoring four glaciers in Kyrgyzstan. Continuous measurements of glaciers in Kyrgyzstan are essential for climate monitoring purposes. Researchers from the University of Fribourg and Central Asia have (re)introduced glacier monitoring with direct glaciological methods and CATCOS undertakes annual in situ glacier mass-balance measurements. A new stake network to measure annual ablation was set up on Golubin, Suek Zapadniy Glacier and at Glacier No. 354 in 2010 and at Abramov Glacier in 2011. Stakes are equally distributed over the ablation area and measured and re-drilled annually. Preliminary results were obtained for annual mass-balances for Suek Zapadniy, Glacier No. 354 and Golubin. Registration Please RSVP to [email protected] with your name and affiliation. Please indicate if you require Russian translation. Biography Marlene Kronenberg is a CATCOS project assistant working with Professor Martin Hoelzle at University of Fribourg. She leads the field work currently being conducted in the Tien Shan mountains. Language The lecture will be conducted in English. Russian translation will be provided upon prior request.
