PUBLIC WORKS CONDUCTS SEVENTH ANNUAL SUMMER ENGINEERING CAMP Preparing our Youth for Future Careers in Public Service The City of Houston, Department of Public Works and Engineering, launched its Seventh annual Engineering Summer Camp on Monday, June 10, 2013 running through Friday, June 21, 2013. The two (2) week camp provides twenty-eight (28) selected Houston area high school students with an up close look at many of the challenges Public Works employees face daily. The students receive hands-on experience with the jobs performed by Public Works, staffers, project managers, designers and engineers, stressing the importance of post-high school curriculums in Engineering, Science and Mathematics. Through field trips to drinking water purification and waste water treatment plants, construction sites, infrastructure and support locations within the city, students are exposed to the day to day operations and experiences of providing daily services to the citizens of the 4th largest city in America. This innovative program highlights and focuses on some of the skills needed for a career in Public Works. Students learn how coordinated effort from project design to implementation, relate to real world scenarios and solutions to daily issues. Their summer camp experience will also include gathering working information toward creating their own projects based on what they learned. Those experiences will include; • Visit to overlay and storm drain project work sites. • Classroom instruction on interpreting basic engineering terminology • Lessons on traffic and transportation procedures and principals • Tours of Drinking Water and Waste Water treatment facilities. • Instruction on computer based engineering application • Overview of street construction projects including Bikeway projects • Learn survey and field measurement techniques used for bridge and roadway projects.
