PUP leader offers Support to Party Colleague. PUP Leader Billy Hutchinson has offered his wholehearted support to party colleague Winston Irvine following malicious and preposterous allegations on a BBC Northern Ireland Spotlight Programme. Mr Hutchinson said, The PUP condemns all criminality, regardless of who the alleged perpetrators are. The PUP has resolutely stood up against the criminals and drug-dealers who damage our communities while other political parties have been silent on this issue. We are shocked but not surprised by the quality of the BBC journalism. Im disappointed that the BBC has engaged in this type of practice. The programme has tried to undermine the attempts of those who are working to address deep seated social and political problems. I would like to offer my wholehearted support to Winston Irvine following these malicious, unfounded and politically motivated allegations. Winston is committed to community development and peace-building and his ongoing work in the North Belfast area and elsewhere is to be congratulated and he sets an example for others to follow. Winstons example and record speaks for itself and as an advocate for peace and conflict transformation he has shown great leadership and taken many risks. If peace is to work then we need to get behind those who are working daily to reconcile communities and overcome conflict while also addressing the complex social issues they face. Some of the issues raised in the programme are social issues that are unique in the context of Northern Ireland as it moves from conflict towards a more sustainable future. However, this future must be shared by everyone and it is important that irresponsible television programming does not lead to the further marginalisation of those who are already losing out in peace. The programme is testament to the insecurities of political opponents who consistently fail to represent working-class communities. The rising tide of support for the PUP recognises the voice it provides for the working-class loyalist community. Scurrilous and false allegations will not prevent us from continuing to provide this voice. He concluded, This is a cynical attempt to criminalise confident, progressive loyalists due to the threat that they pose to the political elites. Winstons involvement in the political and peace process is a vital step in helping to develop a lasting peace. All groups and individuals who want to play a positive role need to be part of finding solutions to Northern Irelands unfinished business.
