PURSUIT OF REDRESS The Deed of Settlement is the latest in a long line in the pursuit for recognition, justice and redress by Te Atiawa for breaches against the Treaty for well over a century. Claims began after the 1860s Land Wars through petitions and protests and led to 12 separate commissions between 1890 and 1975. In 1987 the Taranaki Maori Trust Board filed a claim to the Waitangi Tribunal which became WAI 143. After 12 hearings with the Iwi of Taranaki the Tribunal issued Kaupapa Tuatahi in 1996. As a result of the Tribunal Report Te Atiawa began negotiations with the crown and a Heads of Agreement (HOA) was signed in 1999. The quantum was $34m. The HOA went nowhere because of internal hapu differences. In 2009 TAIA got back into negotiations and received a mandate from 98% of Te Atiawa members to negotiate a settlement. The Iwi mandate was recognized by the crown in 2010. A Terms of Negotiation with the crown was signed in 2010, an Agreement In Principle in 2012 and a Deed of Settlement was initially in June 2014. The Deed of Settlement will be signed on 9 August - if it is accepted by Te Atiawa members. The outcome of the vote on the Deed of Settlement will determine whether this is an end to the pursuit or just another step along the way. A Background to the pursuit of redress is on page 15 of the Ratification Book. Email if you would like a copy of the Ratification Book = [email protected].
