‘Pack lose in nail biter versus the Rams The Wolfpack traveled to Wenatchee, WA to face the Wentachee Valley Rams on Saturday, April 26th. It was the second straight week the ‘Pack has faced the Rams and the third meeting of the season. Wolfpack Alpha faced the Rams in a non-league pre-season game losing 7 to 18, followed by a WFL game that saw the ‘Pack win 37 – 12 on Saturday, April 19th. This third meeting was viewed by the Wolfpack as an opportunity. An opportunity to play one of the best teams in the Washington Football League as well as a chance to develop young players that are second and third on the depth chart. As well, it was a chance to rest injured players. #11 Zach Clow, #5 Jerrall Haynes, #27 Adam Anderson, and #87 David Hoyer were all rested and a number of other players were out for personal reasons and/or work obligations. Despite this adversity and low numbers the ‘Pack had many opportunities to win the game and players were able to get quality reps to aid in their development. #33 Justin Meusy had a solid game rushing and receiving on offense, kicking on special teams, and tackling on defense. #33 Meusy answered his call to perform on the day and was all over the field. #15 Travis Martin started the game at quarterback and played throughout making plays with his arm and his feet. The game started out as most Rams/’Pack games; a chess match. Wenatchee scored a field goal on their first possession making the score 3 to 0. During the second quarter #15 Martin connected with #7 Bobby Hughes on a short pass who took the ball 46 yards for a score. The Wolfpack subsequently went for a two point conversion that #15 Martin ran in himself, however, the score was called back due to a penalty, making the score at halftime 6 to 3. During the third quarter #15 Martin threw a 33 yard bomb to #35 Cam Hubbard for the score. #15 Martin then ran in the two-point conversion, making the score 14 to 3. The Rams answered by rumbling down the field and popping a long run for a score. The extra point was missed and the score at the end of three was 14 to 9. The Rams continued their assault during the 4th quarter and rumbled for another touchdown. A two-point conversion was stuffed by #6 Chris Kirk, #76 Maximillian Noll, and #8 Scott Word to bring the score to 15 to 14. With the Rams threatening to run out the clock the Wolfpack defense pinned their ears back as they made three consecutive stops and called three time outs. Wenatchee Valley elected to go for it on 4th and 4 and were subsequently stuff 6 yards behind the line of scrimmage with #25 Brian Spiller leading the effort. This gave the ‘Pack the ball back with 2:30 remaining in the game. #3 Kenny Yetter took the helm at quarterback and marched the ‘Pack down the field connecting on passes to #7 Hughes and #9 Alex deGolia. #7 Hughes, #33 Meusy, and #3 Yetter also rushed in the hurry up offense to advance the offense to the 13 yard line with 12 seconds left in the game. A #33 Meusy field goal attempt was blocked as time expired to give the Rams the victory. In addition to a blocked field goal and a two-point conversion called back, 3 interceptions, and a touchdown called off due to off-sides also killed the ‘Pack in their efforts. “You can’t make mistakes against a sound team like the Wenatchee Valley Rams and expect to win.” Head Coach Jim Nendel said, “But I am proud of the effort of the guys who came to play today.” A number of players were asked to play out of position and lineman were asked to play both ways throughout the entire game. #51 Gary Plumlee, #54 Simon Cudmore, #76 Noll, #59 Rob Drass, and #65 Demetrius Palmer virtually never left the field but all performed at a high level. #25 Spiller and #6 Kirk dominated the field at the safety position making multiple tackles in the backfield in a tremendous effort. Although disappointed with the loss, the ‘Pack have a lot to build off of and lessons learned that they will carry with them to finish the season strong. Playoff Picture The Wolfpack, 3 – 1 (3 – 0), will face the Waitsburg Elite, 5 – 0 (3 – 0) on Saturday, May 3rd in the second annual Military Appreciation Game. The winner of this up-coming contest will secure the #1 Seed and home field advantage for the Championship Game. After this weekend the playoff picture will be set with 4 of the 5 Washington Football League Teams advancing to the playoffs the weekend of May 17th. The #1 seed will host the #4 seed and the #2 seed will host the #3 seed for chance to play in the WFL Championship game on May 31st.
