Pam Mazanec, a Larkspur businesswoman who sits on Colorado’s Board of Education, posted on a Facebook discussion thread her concerns that questions asked on the Advanced Placement U.S. history test “portray the negative viewpoint as the correct answer.” “As an example, I note our slavery history,” she wrote to a woman who teaches AP U.S history. “Yes, we practiced slavery. But we also ended it voluntarily, at great sacrifice, while the practice continues in many countries still today! Slavery -- so glad we got out in front of that issue and voluntarily stopped the practice in the grand ol USA after only about 250 years. (Hey kids, arent we Americans so special and blessed). Does it matter that a Colorado State School Board member believes the US gave up slavery voluntarily? Does it matter that she is unwilling to see Americans as regular flawed humans who have and continue to do great things but also have a history of atrocious exploitation as a people and as a country. Maybe not. I mean, damn, we enacted the Voting Rights Act and the Civil Rights Act and stopped lynching African Americans voluntarily. We just suddenly became enlightened, recognized the error of our ways and enacted new laws that empowered and respected all our citizens, regardless of race and gender. It was a collective moment of transformation; we just all saw the light. Beautiful I tell you. We also decided that our Native American residents really were just regular people entitled to full rights and we returned to them all the lands we accidentally took (Oops, sorry about that). We suddenly decided that kids shouldnt be forced to work in coal mines and, when we got all that written up, well, we graciously granted women the right to vote. All voluntarily. Arent we just the best!! Makes me so proud to be an American! And even now, were just marching forward through a field of poppies, singing beautiful songs, and passing all the laws we need to legalize gay marriage because, well, its just so obviously the right thing to do. Gee whiz, were swell! Transformative social change in America is a lovely walk! A cakewalk in fact. So kids, when you go to learnin bout our history, remember were Gods chosen (right after the Israelis) and all those liberal folks that talk about slavery, child labor, exploitation of the environment, poisonous medicines, and Wall street rip-off artists, well, they arent real Americans. They dont love America like us patriots. Now, smile everyone and strike up the band. Were Americans and were the best!
