Panthers Pound Lions by Dave Collins It was a long and disappointing night for Lions fans, but even more so for the team and coaching staff. The rule of the running clock was a relief to all during the 4th quarter. As Coach Josh Hughes put it, accurately and to the point, “We got drilled.” When the dust cleared, the final tally was Fleming County 45 and Lewis County 6. Missing the presence of Isaac Weddington at quarterback was without a doubt a psychological problem to overcome. He was one of the best QBs in the area and displayed tremendous leadership. Tommy Parks did a creditable job as his replacement under extremely difficult circumstances. In his first varsity start Parks faced a constant barrage of rushing linemen and blitzing linebackers. Combine that with more than one snap flying over his head and you’ve got a nightmare for any quarterback. Fleming County obviously deserves much credit for their performance in the 45 to 6 romp. They have both size and speed. Touchdowns were scored by James(2), Burnett(2), Boyd, Puente, and Williams. Boyd threw for 2 of these TDs and Burnett had an 88 yard punt return for one of his scores. Left-footed McAdams added 3 extra points. Field position played a major role in the game and often left both our offense and defense with their backs to the wall. Defensively, there were some bright spots. Dalton Stamm had another outstanding game. Stamm had some huge stops and continued to make tackles from sideline to sideline with his relentless pursuit. Kirk Everman had a strong game at middle linebacker, Austin Egbert and Jared Stapleton continue to make big plays, and Isaiah Esham recovered a fumble in the end zone to stop a Panther touchdown. Offensively, the highlight was a 94 yard pass play from Parks to the speedy Tyler Mustard. Everman added some power yardage as a new addition to the Lion backfield. Hopefully, our Lions can regroup and regain the confidence they had during the 3 game winning streak. They are a much better team than the one we saw last Friday. Roll Pride! Fleming 12 7 26 0 45 Lewis 0 6 0 0 6 Fleming County’s Maverick Burnett was awarded the game MVP trophy and a $100 scholarship from Western-Southern Insurance Company.
