Parent by Example-Raul Ries Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. Honor your father and mother, which is the first commandment with promise: that it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth. Ephesians 6:1-3 In Ephesians 5, Paul the Apostle ended the chapter talking to men and women and their relationships, before the Lord. He had to get the parents on the right page, before he could speak to the children, because the children will follow the examples set by their parents. The children of Spirit-filled parents should not only know the Lord, but the Word of God. When you go back into the Old Testament, to Deuteronomy 6, Moses gave us the beginning of the family. He also told the parents their responsibility. They were to put Scriptures on the walls and teach their children the Word of God. This is important, because children are most influenced in their homes, not in the church. Many times people want to put the responsibility on the church, but the responsibility is on parents and grandparents. They have greater access to them. They only go to church on Sunday morning, Sunday evening or Wednesday evening for a few hours. The majority of their time is spent with their parents. As parents, we have the responsibility of knowing the God of the Bible, so we can teach our children biblical principles and be examples for our children to follow. Our actions have to be in line with what we say, or we will confuse our children. If we want children who obey their parents, we must first be examples of men and women who are obedient to God.
