Parents often tell me they try to get their child to practice, but he/she doesnt know where to start. Here are some tips to getting started. 1. Get warmed up! This could be as simple as playing open strings for a few minutes to work on tone control, or it could be a scale or two youve been working on in lessons, or even just trying a challenging bow stroke (spiccato sixteenths anyone?) 2. Play whatever you worked on in your last class with a teacher. This might be a new part to an old song, or a challenging part of an older song. Work on it the same way the instructor did with you: small parts at a time, slowly, repeating it a few times to get better at it, gradually doing larger parts at a time. 3. Play some old homework. Maybe the rest of that old song, or another song you didnt get a chance to work in lesson, or even an older piece you havent looked at in a while. 4. Perform! Have mom/dad/babysitter/brother/grandma sit for 5 minutes and listen to you play through one thing you practiced today. This is a great way for parents to be involved in their childs practicing, and motivation for the child to really improve each practice session and show off for you. Happy practicing!
