Paris, Day 2 Of course, you start your day in Paris by going to the market. After sleeping over 12 hours each - we both were jet lagged and our bodies hurt from the uncomfortable seats at American Airlines, I went to the market to buy fresh bread and groceries for breakfast. I made us a wonderful breakfast and then we walked over to the RER, where I put Bill on a train to Charles de Gaulle airport to retrieve his wallet. I must admit that I was smitten by the friendliness of the ticket attendant. Not only was he being friendly and helpful, but he was doing so in French, Spanish and English. Paris has turned over a new leaf.... While Bill was at the airport, I relaxed in our apartment at 8 rue de Budé. I finished reading Jennifer Lee Carrells Shakespearean mystery/thriller: Interred With Their Bones (review will be posted tomorrow). After Bill returned with his wallet - nothing was stolen - we went to Opera Garnier to see if we could get into tonights performance of Aida at the opera Bastille. We lucked out and were able to get to excellent orchestra seats on stage left. We walked leisurely home, following Rue de la Opera, stopping for lunch at a bistro. We bought dinner at a boulangerie and we ate it home right after we got ready for Aida. I have seen Aida before, but nothing prepared me for tonights version. Instead of being set in the past and in Egypt, it was set in the modern times in France. The priest is a Catholic cardinal, instead of an Egyptian worshiper of Isis. The countries at war are Italy and France, instead of Ethiopia and Egypt. The armed forces are all buffed, shirtless men. At one point, a cross is burned and Klansmen appear wearing their hoods. The staging was spectacular - the whole stage elevates to reveal a cemetery of dead bodies. There is a golden monument that rotates as the scenes are changing. In a misty night we walked the few blocks from Opera Bastille to our home. Im now posting this entry alongside the pictures we took today.
