Parkside Music Boosters is looking for help. I recently attended the first meeting of the school year of Parksides Music Boosters, and learned that there are now over 300 students doing some form of music - more than 100 in each of the Strings Orchestra and Concert Band, and the rest in the choir, or taking guitar or ukelele lessons. There are 60 students in Beginning Band alone. Parkside students won three *first* prizes in last years Music in the Parks competition, for the Band, Orchestra and Choir performances. The Band also marched in the Posy Parade this year, the first time any of them had marched in a Band. This is due to the brilliant and inspirational recent additions to the Parkside teaching staff, Ms Mahfouz who leads the Strings, and Ms Ciana who leads the Band. The unfortunate thing is, theyre the victims of their own success. When the music department was much smaller, new students could get a loan of an instrument and there was a greater chance that a student could perform their chosen instrument. Many of our families cant afford to buy an instrument or would struggle to meet the $30-$50/month rental costs from a private music rental business. The music department, through the Music Boosters, is looking for donations of Band and Strings instruments (in fair to good condition, that are reparable and wont cost too much to repair) or money to help pay for other costs. Music is not a core subject so doesnt get the same level of funding as ELA, math or Science, but speaking as the father of one the Bands saxophonists, Music really is a major contribution to success at school. Heres a Nobel Prize winner who owes it all to his music teacher - sollamusicacademy.org/2013/10/nobel-medicine-winner-says-i-owe-it-all-to-my-bassoon-teacher/ Here are videos of some of last years performances: Jazz Band: https://youtube/watch?v=8r-M-jbqQ34 Concert Band: https://youtube/watch?v=cfj9NJQ2NYY Posy Parade: https://youtube/watch?v=U39zVvQWECc
