Parliament is supposed to rise at the end of next week for the summer break, but on Tuesday the Prime Minister told his party room that he intended to ramp up pressure on Labor to support his most precious policies - the introduction of temporary protection visas, the debt ceiling, and the repeal of the carbon and mining taxes. If that means we have to keep the Parliament sitting, well just have to do it, the Prime Minister said. It was an odd tactic, because if it is designed to put public pressure on the opposition to support the governments policy mandates, it is putting a strange power in the hands of the average voter. Given the way politicians from all sides have carried on in this sorry year, well, lets just say that if their holiday plans get disrupted, few citizens will shed tears.
