Part 9 “After dinner, he drank and fell asleep. The dwarf and the men from the town snuck into the house and found the body of the master’s wife, her best friend crying by her bed, and the three children. The dwarf was heart-broken. And the men were appalled that so little had been done by the master. If their resolve wasn’t already rock solid, it was even more so now. They gathered up the body of the master’s wife determined to give her a proper burial if the master wouldn’t. A few wives had come with them and they gathered up the children. The dwarf pulled his love’s best friend to her feet and helped her out of the room. But as they were walking down the hall, the master came out of his room and knocked them down. He pulled a knife from his belt and stabbed the best friend in the shoulder. She screamed so loudly, that the men and women outside with the children could hear her. They came rushing back in. The master whispered in her ear, “You should have stayed to be my wife.” “He raised his knife again, but before he could bring it down through her heart, the dwarf pulled his own knife and stabbed him under the arm and straight into his heart.” “You can stab a man to his heart under his arm?” said my sleepy grandchild. I hoped that wouldn’t be the image I sent her into dreamland with. “Yes, you can. And because no one can live without their heart, he fell to the floor dead. The men came up the stairs and saw the master was dead, the blood was on the dwarf’s knife, and the friend was bleeding and leaning on the dwarf. “They all left the house that night. The master was buried a couple days later. The only people at the funeral were the minister, the undertaker, and the grave digger. The master’s wife was buried the next day. The entire town came to her funeral. The wife’s best friend began living in the house with the dwarf and his children. Over time, they came to love each other. And a little less than a year later they were married. The dwarf, who had been overlooked, was never overlooked again. He was considered a hero and would continue working the fields that the master had owned. Only now he owned them. The people still came to help with the harvest, but now they divided it up amongst themselves before selling what was left. No one lived in the mansion anymore.” “Why? Was it because the master’s wife haunts it?”
