Part Two of Calvins out of the classroom learning experience was a part of the Rogers City Schools 6th Grade Salmon in the Classroom program led by Lafarge Presque Isle. A school bus of 6th graders joined us at the river to experience salmon coming to the shallow waters to spawn. It is a breathtaking experience to witness these large fish fight the currents in their final task in their life cycle. They go up stream to lie their eggs and die, going on to provide food for the wildlife (bears, as we witnessed evidence of) and nutrients for the soul (we certainly noted the smell of the few that hadnt been snagged by a bear or eagle yet!) The students gathered eggs that they will care for in the classroom over the winter, hatch and release back into the river in the spring. It was a gorgeous day in Northern Michigan to get into nature and have an adventure with my husband who helps to lead the wildlife initiatives at the quarry, our group of students, and our young scientist!
