Part of A Mermaid Story: Chapter One Underneath the ocean, the rays from the sun made her hair and tail look like a shiny copper penny. Her slender hands reached around a coral rock and she pulled up a sharp spear. She gripped the strong drift wood handle in her hands and eyed the weapon with her clear blue eyes. She had made this weapon years ago. Even though her father didn’t want her hunting, she liked to know she could take care of herself if the need ever arose. With a quick flick of her tail she shot off through the water towards the more shallow areas of the ocean, where the sweet fish would be a little more abundant. She glanced up to the surface and smiled, one rule was never to go to the surface. She had broken that rule ages ago. She could still remember the feeling of the sea breeze on her face; the sun shining hot and bright on her head. She came to the cove that she usually frequented and broke the surface of the water quietly, her eyes searching the shore line. The water was so clear here she was sure that if any human were to come they would see her chasing the fish near the coral rocks. The coast was clear and she dove back under the water to begin her hunt. After an hour of hunting her spear was filled to the tip with fish and she smiled at her catch; she hunted better than most of the mermen that she knew. As she started to swim out of the cove there was a long tentacle that snaked out from the rocks and grabbed the tip of her tail. She gasped and spun around, flicking her tail spasmodically to try and shake the tentacle. “Easy my dear,” A hoarse voice spoke as an older woman, her lower half a squid, came out from the coral bed, “I mean you know harm.” “You’re the sea witch, of course you mean me harm, let me go or my father shall hear about this.” The mermaid spoke loudly, flicking her tail again. The Sea Witch laughed, lifting her tentacle away in a snake like motion, “And let him know you were this close to shore without an escort?” The mermaid narrowed her blue eyes at the Witch and turned her back to swim away, “We’ll meet again my dear!” The Sea Witch called as the Mermaid quickly swam back to the deep ocean. Chapter Two The Sea King swam back and forth nervously, it had been several hours since he had seen his daughter, and he was beginning to become more than worried. There was a noise through the archway and his sharp blue eyes focused there as he watched his daughter swim through with the spear in her hand. Furious, he met her halfway across the room, “You’ve been to the shoreline without my permission again!” She rolled her eyes at him and passed her spear to a smaller merman that had swam in behind her, his brown eyes were nervous as the King continued, “I’ve told you several hundred times Phyllia, not to go to the shoreline! You know how the humans are! You know that they would slaughter you!” Phyllia shook her head and swam past him, “Where I hunt there are no humans father.” The Sea King let out a loud yell and turned to the merman that floated nearby, visibly shaking from the Kings outburst, “Take the fish and break that spear into a thousand pieces! I want a guard with her constantly from now on or I will kill you all!” The merman quickly swam out of the room as Phyllia paused, looking briefly over her shoulder, “I’ll just make another one.” “You’re back talk I’ve had enough of daughter! I catch you swimming anywhere near the shore line, or hear word of it, I will chain you myself to the ship graveyard for the sharks!” Phyllia narrowed her eyes and swam away quickly towards her quarters. Her gills, where the normal human’s ribs would be, flapped quickly as she tried to calm down. She had never seen her father that mad before. There was a noise behind her and she turned to look at a guard in the archway. “Princess.” He nodded his head at her, his blonde hair floating with the movement. Phyllia went over to the bench by an opening that looked out across the ancient underwater world they lived in and curled her tail underneath her, “I don’t understand why he gets so angry.” “Hunting isn’t your job princess, one day you’ll have to rule this underwater kingdom as your father does.” The guards green eyes looked from the Phyllia to the window and back, “You have to look at it from his point of view, all his other children have died, you’re the only one left. Without you, who would rule?” Phyllia laughed, “You could do it Addis!” The guard, Addis, shook his head again and joined her to look out at the kingdom, “Phyllia, one day you’ll understand.” “So you’re going to be up my tail constantly?” “Yes, I was threatened with my life if I took one eye off you.” She shrugged, “At least it’s you and not that blundering idiot Volitan.” Addis narrowed his eyes, “Yes, he is very… peculiar.” “Ugh, I can’t stand the merman.” Addis laughed then and Phyllia turned to look at him, her eyes lighting up, “Can we go for a swim?” Addis shook his head no, “Today you are grounded to the confines of this room, but tomorrow, I promise we’ll go for a swim.” Phyllia looked disappointed but she agreed with him as she looked back out over the kingdom.
