Participating in Philanthropists Month for the 2nd time on 9th and 10th August, the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Federation, Singapore, aka DHHFS is a non-profit organisation registered with the National Council of Social Services Singapore. Its motto is “Singapore Sign Language is Spoken Here”. They enable the deaf and hard-of-hearing members to be involved in bringing together Deaf people and share common goals in the Deaf Community to promote awareness of Deaf Culture, Deaf History and Singapore Sign Language, created naturally by the deaf and hard-of-hearing people. DHHFS’ objectives are: i) Advocacy; and ii) Empowerment of the deaf and hard-of-hearing people, and certain hearing people through DHHFS’ unique activities such as the development of the Singapore Sign Language, collections of Deaf culture and oral Deaf history, Deaf Arts and Crafts, Deaf education through Sign Language interpretation for the Deaf participants and other programmes and activities that will help the Deaf community at large. DHHFS also works with other organisations to further their objectives and to raise the pride an dignity of the deaf and hard-of-hearing people and the Deaf Community in Singapore by uniting Deaf and hard-of-hearing persons. The term “Deaf”, italicized, refers to the linguistic and culture of the Deaf community. Another term, “deaf” refers to the pathological term to label people with hearing loss. Also, another term, “hearing-impaired” is outdated and pathologically negative towards the Deaf people. Instead, the term, “people with hearing loss” is more acceptable in accordance with the World Federation of the Deaf. “DHHFS” refers to the self-advocacy run by, of and for the Deaf people to promote the issues faced by the Deaf people, and raise public awareness of those issues. DHHFS creates the space and time for the Deaf people to meet and discuss ways to improve the lives of the Deaf and share the difficulties faced by the Deaf in their day-to-day lives while gaining economic and social acceptance. My deafness does not deprive me of anything. I can do anything I want. Except maybe sing.” Summer Cider (Gallaudet University Recruiter)
