Participation is steadily improving at our Wednesday morning speed workouts at Victoria Park. I can see people’s mentality shifting away from the high mileage of the summer challenge to focused training for the fall race season. It’s time to reap the benefits of all that base building you were doing this summer. What’s that? You didn’t even realize you were building your base mileage. Isn’t Jennifer Florida sneaky? We will begin gradually ramping up the intensity of our Wednesday morning workouts starting next week, peaking in late October for the Marine Corp Marathon and the other early fall races, and maintaining that level for a few weeks until the taper for the Space Coasties. Don’t worry I even programmed in a few easier (relatively) recovery weeks. 7 x 800m (1 mile easy warm up, 7-½ mile fast intervals with a short walk break in between, and about a ¾ mile cool down) will be the workout next Wednesday and look for the reintroduction of mile repeats mid-September. How fast can you run one mile? Someone earns a PR every time we do it which always makes it exciting. When the workouts get long in the fall I usually end up running by myself by the last interval. Who will be tough enough and dedicated enough to stick it out until the end this year? More than likely, those will be the same people that beat you across the finish line on race day. Don’t be intimidated by all the marathon talk. Runners of any skill level can benefit from doing these intervals on a regular basis. You do not have to worry about keeping up or falling behind. You run at your pace, although expect some “encouragement” if you are not pushing yourself enough to reap the benefits of the workout. We can easily scale down the workouts to meet your goals, whether they be a half marathon, a faster 5k, or simply getting your heart pumping harder on a regular basis.
