Particle Physics to aid nuclear cleanup Remember the meltdown - TopicsExpress

Particle Physics to aid nuclear cleanup Remember the meltdown at Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant in Japan during the tsunami in 2011? We are still perplexed at how to clean up the site. Quite obviously, the first dawn of realization comes when you have a view at things. But looking inside a melted down nuclear reactor is not childs play. Now, a team of particle physicists (a seemingly unlikely combination at first glance, perhaps) has proposed a new technique to image the interior of the nuclear reactors at Fukushima. They will use muons, a higher mass cousin of the electron. This is yet another of the fascinating spin-offs from scientific research that changes our perspective of life. symmetrymagazine.org/article/august-2014/particle-physics-to-aid-nuclear-cleanup
