Party-ism – V – Patriotism The Spanish attack on our status - TopicsExpress

Party-ism – V – Patriotism The Spanish attack on our status is a prime source of discomfort. But enough has been said, written and “Facebooked” on this aspect of our situation already. What makes me more uncomfortable is our own bitter internal arguments. The present Spanish Junta of PP has always been less than friendly to us. This is all the more so as they face accusations of gross corruption by their top echelon figures. Gibraltar is not just a nationalistic rallying cry; it is excellent camouflage for their criminal misconduct. But our little town is dependent on good relations with the country that controls our only land access. To risk instituting policies that endanger or aggravate the well-being of ALL Gibraltarians is madness. Just saying that a certain policy has to go forward because “we put it into our manifesto” this does NOT necessarily mean such a policy is to our (“our” as in the whole of Gib) advantage. Because of this, no government of whatever hue should embark on any policies viz-a-viz Spain without prior consultation with the various bodies that make up the economic structure of Gibraltar. I am not just talking about the Chamber of Commerce, I am talking about the Trades unions, the Gib Federation of Small Businesses, the Finance Sector, the Gaming sector,... all of whom have a stake in the safety of our overall economy. I am alarmed by some short-sighted comments among our citizens gleeful at the problems the present situation is causing Gibraltarians that live in Spain, the Soto-Society among others The stranglehold Spain can have at the frontier – and other access points – regardless whether legal or not, can & will be highly detrimental to ALL levels of our economy. It will affect the banker and the bricklayer, the bus driver and the businessman. I find also an underlying threat by some die-hards that not defending the indefensible policies that have brought us to this dangerous situation is virtually an act of treachery! We who complain about Spain’s lack of respect for our Democratic Rights must be free to exercise those same rights here without fear of incurring an internal threat from those who, through sheer fanaticism, place “PARTY-ISM” above true PATRIOTISM.
