Passage: Hebrews 1-2 In the past God spoke to our forefathers - TopicsExpress

Passage: Hebrews 1-2 In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom he made the universe. – Hebrews 1:1-2 Jesus is the Son of God. The book of Hebrews opens with a beautifully crafted statement of Jesus as the Son of God and the culmination of God’s revelation across the ages. This description begins a long section that first establishes Jesus’ divinity and then emphasizes his human identity in order to show that he can serve as a “merciful and faithful high priest”. God’s Son is the one through whom God “created the worlds.” He is the perfect and exact manifestation of “God’s glory” and God’s very being”. The Son is far “superior to angels”, who, great as they are, are only messengers of God. The author quotes a series of collections from the psalms, alternating between passages that in their original context speak of the king as divinely appointed and those that speak of God. The author next turns to the scriptural description of human beings as “lower than the angels” but still in authority over creation with “all things under his feet”. Such a status has not been realized for humanity at large, but Jesus does fulfill that role as the perfect representative of humanity, for he has gone through the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone. Through suffering he became “the pioneer of their salvation, freeing humanity from being enslaved “by the fear of death”. Jesus, the Messiah is Creator, King and my Savior.
