Passport to Modern Jazz Host: DJalma Garnier Nov 05, 2013 10:00PM - 12:00AM Its an understatement that Ronald Shannon Jackson and the Decoding Societys 1980s gigs at Carnival of Dreams in Ft. Worth were popular. Fame and fortune may have eluded Mr. Jackson but never very hip and happening gigs. He was not just from Ft. Worth but related to David Fathead Newman on one side of his family and King Curtis on the other. I started playing drums in elementary school under the clarinetist John Carter, and in high school under Mr. Baxter, the same teacher who taught Ornette Coleman, Curtis Ousley, Dewey Redman, John Carter, Julius Hemphill, Charles Moffett, and James Jordan.* His concept of drumming and avant-guard fusion advanced the concept of todays popular world jazz. “We’re coming from a world music as opposed to one kind of beat,” Mr. Jackson told The New York Times in 1982. Everything we do has a foundation… I think the African phrases are very obvious. I think the funk phrases are very obvious. I think the Oriental phrases are obvious. I think the Bulgarian rhythms are there — I hear all of it.”** Apologies for no early Ornette Coleman Primetime.
