Past perfect Uses –part 1- A/ the past perfect is the equivalent of the present perfect Ex: - Ann has just left, iif you hurry you will catch her - When I arrived Ann had just left . * Past perfect, however, is not like the present perfect ,not restricted to actions whose time is not mentioned. We could say: - He had left his case on the 4.30 train. B/ The past perfect is used with for/since/always…. for an action which began before the time of speaking in the past and: 1-was still continuing at that time: Ex: - Ann had lived in that cottage for ten years, and she had no wish to leave. 2-stopped at that time or just before It Ex: - The old tree which had stood for 300 years, before our school was build, suddenly crashed to the ground. 3- the past perfect is used with an action which stopped some time before the time of speaking: - He has served in the army for ten years, then had retired and married. His children were at school now
