Past police control and security, waiting to board flight for third trip to the African continent. In fact, this will be the closest one can be to Europe while still being in Africa. Yet it is still a world apart: a Muslim monarchy, and specifically the port city immortalized by William Burroughs as Interzone in Naked Lunch. Also the longtime home of Paul Bowles, Tangier is no longer part of the normal tourist itinerary in Morocco, but theres no way Im not paying tribute to some literary luminaries whose stomping ground this once was. Expect reports not only from Tangier but also from Chefchaouen, Meknes, Fes, Marrakech, the Valee de Dades, Ouarzazate, Essaouira, and Rabat--if I manage to get everywhere and do everything I intend. There have been many, many obstacles to overcome to take this vacation, right up to this morning when there was no hot water or electricity in my apartment, and the RER train I took cut midway through the route. However, sac-a-dos on the shoulder, guidebooks and phrasebooks in the breast pocket, and the spirit of adventure in my heart, I now ready myself for whatever is to come.
