Pat went to the back door last night and said I wish I knew the bears timetable - oh! oh! look! and there, across the street and down one house, was an adolescent black bear. Feasting on someones garbage. (The place were in has a bear-proof pail. I wish theyd make that a law around here.) We watched him for a while, then a truck came along - and the idiots pulled over to park next to where the bear was feeding! We couldnt figure out if they were just stupid, or crazy. The bear climbed up a nearby tree and stayed there, but the truck didnt leave. Then it occurred to us that the truck-people might be thinking What a nice pelt this would make, no ones watching, so.... I pulled out one of the police whistles we wear when we go out at night here and blew a couple of sharp blasts. Truck took off. This morning the bear was gone, and some poor guy was out there for half an hour picking up the scattered garbage.
