We thought we had lost one of Jet’s chicks last night as when I fed her this morning there was only four. Three little black ones and only one yellow. I searched everywhere but could not find it so assumed it had been taken by some predator. C’est la Vie. Then just as we were leaving to go down town, a little chick appeared by the gate with no mother in sight. I dashed round and checked Jet and she still had four. I then searched and found Steel, but she had her three. So this must be the missing one. Hooray! Then came the fun part. “Here we go round the Mulberry bush” comes to mind. Frankie went one way, kids fishing net in hand, and I went another to try and catch the poor little mite, but it evaded us at every twist and turn, and there were many, and managed to get back deep in the thorny bushes before we could catch it. At this point we gave up and went shopping. I hoped that Jet would come round and they would reunite. I was just worried that it would try to join Steel’s chicks and would probably be attacked by her. When we got back from shopping, there it was sitting in the middle of the drive, bold as brass, scratching away and looking for food. Still all alone. I leapt out of the car and grabbed the fishing net (left out for this very reason). Boy can they run fast for little things. It ran up to the gate and then managed a 90 degree abrupt change in direction far easier than I did. This time though I managed to net it just as it reached the cover of the bushes. I still got jagged trying to reach in and remove it from the net though. I calmed it down and took it round to Jet. Jet had not moved from the back of the stables, perhaps she was looking for the missing chick – who knows. Anyway I placed it down near her and backed away pretty quickly as Jet managed to take it under her wings, and threaten to have a go at me, all at the same time. Ungrateful!!!!! That’s all I have to say.
