Pathfinder Tris here. An excellent night was had last night demoing Mars Attacks at Gamers Emporium in Swansea. Lots of interest, even from people who hadnt come in specifically for my demo evening (I was gratified to find that people had come in just to see Mars Attacks though). My demo area was busy with players and spectators from the moment I put the game box on the table. I ran multiple people through the first scenario (just playing to 4VP to introduce them to the game mechanic), later we ventured into various scenarios in the book and everyone was really enthusiastic. The consensus of the night was that the game REALLY comes into its own when Heroes are on the board. The Grunts die as quickly as youd expect, but that just makes the Heroes shine even more. However Heroic Point Management was an unexpected tactical element that most gamers were not expecting, spend them too quickly and Heroes die just as quickly, as General Tor found to his cost when he was targeted by a Trooper with the Missile Launcher!! The models were scrutinised in detail as youd expect, but not quite I think as closely as the Martian plastic helmets were :-) . In general most people were happy with the quality of the models, you are not going to please everyone I guess. The scenery was also examined in detail and people (including those with Deadzone terrain) were universally happy (so Ive just disproved not satisfying everyone lol) with the style/variety, easy of assembly (and dis-assembly), by the sheer amount that you get in the box and the fact that it comes pre-clipped was seen as a real bonus too. There were some epic moments, including one game were there were two Mutant Bugs AND two Burning Cows running riot through the ruins at the same time. The Freeze Ray became a firm favourite with Martian players and was used to great effect by one player to keep a couple of Heroes pinned down and effectively out of the game for a couple turns. In summary I am hopeful that the game will be very well received when it goes on general release and become a staple of many hobbyists, it is quick to learn and the game mechanics are simple, but there is variety to keep you interested (even without any of the expansions unlocked in the kickStarter). I for one cannot wait to get my KickStarter pledge and get playing myself!
