Pathway to a higher district rating Clay’s school district is currently ranked 14th among the state’s 67 counties. Kenny’s plan will put Clay on track to attain a top-10 rating. These are the steps he will take to get us there. 1) Principal meetings - Kenny will meet with a different school principal each week to increase communication between principals and the school board and to prevent problems before they happen. - Green Cove Springs Jr. High Principal Jeff Umbaugh says: “Kenny’s plan to meet with a different principal every week to assess school and student needs has never been done before, and it is brilliant.” 2) Restore letter grades - Many parents of first and second grade students express confusion about the sudden absence of letter grades on report cards. Kenny will work to reinstate traditional letter-grade scales on student report cards to eliminate confusing academic reports and improve communication with parents. 3) Preparing students to enter the workforce - Establish and foster partnerships with local businesses to train and mentor high school students. This collaboration will create a steady flow of qualified graduates ready to fill meaningful jobs. - Give high school students more resources to receive vocational training at professionally equipped training sites. 4) Oppose Common Core - In Kenny’s capacity as an elected official representing constituents from Clay County, he will be proactive in speaking out against Common Core standards to our lawmakers in Tallahassee. 5) Keeping extracurriculars as basic curriculum - Kenny believes art, music and extracurriculars are important building blocks that contribute to a solid education. As a father of four children in the Clay school system and the husband of a former Green Cove Springs Jr. High teacher, he can personally attest to the value these elements add. He will ensure children continue to enjoy the positive outlets that extracurriculars provide. Studies have shown that enrichment boosts the overall performance of a school district, and that is his goal for Clay. 6) Keeping taxes low - Kenny will be a good steward of the district’s fiscal resources. He will ensure Clay’s education system is valuable for students and a value to taxpayers. “Leigh’s overall plan for advancing Clay schools to the ranks of Florida’s top-rated districts is an attainable goal for our community.” - Tracey Kendrick, Principal, Clay Hill Elementary Kenny Leigh for Clay County School Board, Dist. 1 Photo
