Patris secures three silver medals for team Palau Palau weightlifter Stevick Patris secured three silver medals for team Palau in the 69kg in the weight lifting event at the 2013 Pacific Mini Games held in Wallis and Futuna. Patris competed against athletes from Nauru, Tuvalu, host Wallis and Futuna, Tonga, PNG, Fiji, Kiribati, and Samoa. According to OWF President, Paul Coffa, this event will be one of the most interesting and intense competitions of all the weight classes. Patris, once again established his presence on the stage as he snatched 114kg for his country. While in the Clean and Jerk, Patris wowed the crowd by lifting a staggering 147kg for a total weight of 261kg, securing three silver medals for Palau. This is yet another stellar performance by Patris as he has set two more personal best weights to his long list of accomplishments. In fact, Patris has gained 12kg in his regime in the last year alone. According to Paul Coffa of the OWF this has never happened before in the years of weightlifting in the region. In canoe, team Palau competed in the men’s V6 500 and 1500 meter sprints. Although the boys did their best in both races they were not able to make the top three places. For many of them, this is their first regional competition at the Pacific Games level and the results of their races are as follows: 1500M – 8:11.98; 500M – 2:13.94. Team Palau ranks 6th in the Pacific Mini Games. In the Va’a competition, Marina Toribiong secured Palau’s first ever medal in this event of the Pacific Games since Palau’s participation in 1999. Toribiong, who is also known as Miss Defiance, clung to her paddle and kicked up the pace to ensure that Palau’s name went in the records of the Pacific Games. Toribiong’s flawless paddling technique and determination allowed her to breeze by her opponent from Wallis and Futuna at the last 100 meter stretch and finish just behind Tahiti with a stellar time of 2:49.75. In track and field, Palau’s track boys, Rodman and Gwynn competed in the 100 meter Sprint Preliminaries. Rodman was seeded in Heat 1 and came in third with at time of 10.96s. This is a personal best time for Rodman. He advanced to the semi finals and came in with a time of 10.87s, advancing him to the Finals. Gwynn, on the other hand, was seeded in Heat 3 and gave it his all finishing with a personal best time of 11.53s. Unfortunately this was not enough to advance him to the semi finals. This is Gwynn’s first appearance at a competition of the standard of the Pacific Games. On behalf of Palau National Olympic Committee Executive Board, CdM Alonz Moses, Athletics Coach Stallone Anghel, Va’a Coach Tino Faatuuala, they extend their congratulations to all the athletes and wish them the best of luck in the remainder of their events.
