Pauanui Jazz Jam - Sunday 11th August 2013 History – Jim - TopicsExpress

Pauanui Jazz Jam - Sunday 11th August 2013 History – Jim Allison, played with the Merv Thomas Dixielander’s at the Crystal Palace in Mt Eden, Auckland during the late 50’s and early 60’s. He moved to Thames in the mid 60’s. He played with local musicians in Thames and had a regular gig for many years at the Kurrajong Restaurant, run by Keith Dalgetty. Missing his jazz muso buddies from Auckland, he decided to organise a reunion in Thames at the Kurrajong. After moving to Pauanui in the 80’s Jim decided this one off reunion might be fun as a yearly event. The first of these happened in the late eighties and was held on a mid-winter Sunday afternoon at the Pauanui Club. They continued for the next ten years. Jim is now eighty and still playing. An enthusiastic group is organising the event to happen again this year. The Day – A bus load of musicians and members of the Auckland Jazz and Blues Club will arrive at Pauanui at approximately 12pm on Sunday 11th August. For the next eight hours local and not so local musicians will play some wonderful jazz and blues, catch up, swap stories and enjoy the odd drink or three. Format – Musicians normally perform as organised groups, the length of time depends on the number of performers wanting to play on the day. Sometimes groups are organised on the day. Anybody wanting to jam with these groups is welcome to provided that they organise this prior to performing. (Just jumping in is not appropriate.) The main focus on the day is having fun and enjoying great music and company. Facilities – The Pauanui Club provides the venue, the bar is open – as is the kitchen. A good PA is provided. A sound man will be available. The club is open to everyone with no covercharge. Drummers – There will be a drum set available. If you wish to use your own, please contact me in advance. Keyboard players – There will be a choice of a touch sensitive 88 key acoustic electric piano, Fender Rhodes electric piano or a Hammond SK2 for organ players. Bring your own if you need to. Vocalists – Microphone provided but bring your own if you wish. All other musicians bring your own instruments and equipment as necessary. There will be a bass amp and guitar amp that are mic’d for those that wish to just plug in. No musicians are paid. Some free drinks provided for musicians, within reason. All jazz/blues artists welcome although the emphasis is on jazz. All enquiries contact Mark Allison 0274 520 325 / 07 864 7346
