Paul, we were there about a month in aug 1966 plane guarding for either uss enterprise or uss saratoga and they came around asking for volunteers for river boat duty. Stupid me I sign up but they came a few days later and and told me I couldnt go and asked why I was even here. I said well this is where they sent me, why? They said your an only child, you shouldnt even be in a combat zone. I think I told them something like well im here what do we do now. They said well youll stay on the tin can but your not going on river boat duty. I remember being kind of bummed out about it but thanked God for that decision because once we got back home found out the life expectancy on the river boats was like 24 hrs. When I told dad when I got home he told me, :I told you not to volunteer for anything. Who listens to their dad at 18, we already knew it all. I look at all the blessings I would have missed in life because of that decision but it also saddens me because whoever took that spot probably didnt come home. May God bless who ever took my place and his family.
