Pay attention. This is important. If your patient drives, - TopicsExpress

Pay attention. This is important. If your patient drives, they are not homebound. There are charts that say the patient drives. Some people will tell you not to chart that. We wont. We will tell you to find out if the patient really does drive and if so, discharge the patient. Some patients like to look more capable than they are. Medicare will not say that a patient who drives is not homebound. However, if a patient can get in his car and go places, he or she is not confined to the home. If the patient has Alzheimers and drives, do not discharge the patient. Call the family and the physician and get the keys taken away. This is a situation that we see more than we might like. If the patient is a blind diabetic who missed dialysis earlier in the week and is cruising at ten miles down the highway to get to dialysis, dont discharge the patient. That only happened once and we supported the agencys conclusion that she was confined to the home. Finally, if a patient drives up behind you at Burger King after telling you that she never at Fast Food, let her know that BK is not on her diet and discharge her while waiting on your fries.
