Pay attention to your conversations. Are your words edifying, or are they woe is me this person did this or this person did that? Or are they always about someone’s situation, and how bad you feel for them? Listeners, beware of this kind of seemingly humble person, they are gossiping, and using you as a trash can for their offences. If they have an issue with someone every time you talk, be assured they have an issue with you and are now talking about you to others. When I run into these kinds of people who are also hard headed and won’t listen to sound counsel, I begin to slowly put distance between me and that person. However, I am not rude so there may be a time I am in their presence forced to listen by my loving nature. I don’t say a word; I just let them run off at the mouth, while I say nothing. By saying nothing I am in hopes they will see they are running off at the mouth and be quiet, most of the time that doesn’t work. Also by saying nothing I am not giving them any words to misconstrue and accuse me to others. After a short while I slowly begin to make my way, and start walking to the door to make my escape, and they follow me. They are so intense about their gossip they almost follow me home. Sadly they have no idea their words are snaring them – keeping them in their mess while they gossip about the mess of others. (Proverbs 6:2) Pay attention to what you’re saying, it matters!
