Pearl River Delta volume growth outpaced Yangtze, Bohai regions in November - JOC Staff | Dec 08, 2014 3:52PM EST - JOC NEWS Foreign container throughput at Pearl River Delta ports grew 12.8 percent in November, the highest monthly growth in more than two years and putting, according to data reported by Citi Research on Monday. Shenzhen and Guangzhou in the unusual position of being the fastest growing large ports in China. In recent years growth at Yangtze River and Bohai Rim ports far outpaced growth in the Pearl River Delta as manufacturing migrated north and Inland. Foreign container volumes at Shenzhen grew 13.2 percent in November and Guangzhou saw growth for the month at 11.4 percent. By contrast, Shanghai’s international volumes were down 1.9 percent, in November, Tianjin was up 3.5 percent, Dalian was up 0.4 percent and Ningbo was up 8.1 percent. Overall international volumes at Bohai Rim ports was 2 percent and at the Yangtze River delta was up 1.2 percent, far below the double digit gains at the Pearl River Delta. Despite the late year surge, Pearl River Delta ports have continued to lag other China regions this year, growing 5.2 percent year to date versus 5.7 percent at the Bohai Rim and 7.4 percent at the Yangtze River Delta ports. The November PRD growth “is encouraging,” Citi said. China domestic container trade grew 1.3% in November after growing 1.9 percent in October, Citi said. The Pearl River Delta growth is partly explained by diversions from Hong Kong, Citi said. “We believe more traffic was diverted from the nearby Hong Kong port,” it said in a report on Monday. Hong Kong has experienced a difficult year battling port congestion and a raft of late ship arrivals. Congestion reached a crisis stage earlier in the fall when terminals urgently called on the government to make land available for containers and to free up berth space for barges transshipping cargo to and from the Pearl River Delta region.
