People Around You Proverbs 18:1, 2 An unfriendly man pursues selfish ends; he defies all sound judgment. A fool finds no pleasure in understanding but delights in airing his own opinions. In our lives we meet a lot of people each day. We work together with a lot of people in our offices and in our families. Some come into our lives casually, some of them partner with us in our work and some get bonded with our day to day work. All these people will impact our lives in different ways. In proverbs we find a lot of sound teaching for choosing our friends and our companions. In these 2 verses we find two different kinds of people. The first person is the ‘Unfriendly Guy’. An unfriendly person is one who is not considerate about others. He always pursues his own selfish desires. He ensures that he gets the better share. He makes sure that his desires are satisfied ahead of any others interests. He does not look for the common good of the people with him. He is not quick to help but weighs down all conditions before stepping forward to help people or get himself involved in anything. If these issues are going to affect him personally anyway, the person will stay away from it. He defies all sound judgment. He can even take unethical steps to satisfy his desires. We sometimes come across such people who will simply not listen to anything good but stick to their unhealthy ideas and perspectives. The second person seen in the second verse is an ‘all talk talk and no listen’ person. The verse describes him as a fool. Some people often talk without really understanding the situation or the circumstances surrounding it. They deal it as if they know all and can handle all things. They always tend the air their own opinions but fail to listen to the people and the situations around them. We come across these people in our daily lives; today let us ask God to help us to choose our friends wisely. Let us ask God to help us determine the right partners for our businesses. Let God give us the understanding to help us find the right kind of friends who would consider others better and also friends who would listen to us. Finally if we are such people and if God is speaking to us in these areas let us ask God’s forgiveness and turn back and be good listeners and humble people. God bless you.
