"People are no longer second guessing Singapore leadership, they know it as what it is a full fledged dictatorship with rubber stamping elections within a legislation environs full of cheats made to make victory to the opposition nothing less than an act of God. Lee Kuan Yew knew that once respect was gone he would not be able to maintain control and power for long and that’s why he resorted in making examples of the people who dared to oppose him. And by respect he meant fear. But fear has its drawbacks. For one, one can only be fearful for a time and that fear must be maintained too by giving incentives to the people you want to control over. You can’t control people whom you have taken away everything from. Second, fear can and will transform into anger and anger is just as good as courage. And I’m afraid more and more Singaporeans feel that their leaders have taken too much while giving them too little to enjoy. Decreasing quality of life, too much work for too little isn’t a Swiss standard of living. It almost feels like slavery one in which you feel powerless and perpetually exhausted, just another insignificant cog in the system. Once more and more Singaporeans realize that there isn’t going to be an end to their rat race as prices will just skyrocket beyond their reach the harder they try, they will stop entering the race altogether. In a country with one of the highest inequality(dare I say second highest in the world, city wise) and one which is run as a dictatorship there isn’t strong reason to try to excel when you realize your success isn’t entirely up to you and your effort. No one is buying that Singapore is meritocracy when their own leaders are favoring sycophants and their cronies."
