People are speaking out about the case in Webster Im sorry, but Im going to too. I like them was not there to witness anything so my opinion is purely an opinion. Plank South is a great school with great devoted teachers. I have been at the school when there was a fire drill and it truly is a no nonsense serious affair as it should be for the safety of all should a real situation occur... I got a look for talking... The room near the principles office is not a padded cell it is a decent sized room used for parent teacher conferences. It is used to discipline ANY student who is disruptive. To use phrases like solitary confinement and seclusion/restraint are extreme and just fueling the cause. I do not know the child concerned or her academic ability. My question is if there is usually a 1:1 aide where was that person at this time? Is this the first fire drill this child has experienced? Or should they know the expectations? Have problems occurred with fire drill for this child before that should have been an indicator for more assistance? Im all for inclusion into mainstream classes in an ideal world wed all hope our kids can fit in to a regular class. Some however will never get there or shouldnt be there for their own good and for the maximum learning capability of all concerned. Thats a CSE problem. If the child is learning at a 3rd grade level and capable of bring in that class, again I dont know, one would presume a certain level of understanding as to behavioral expectations if the child is mainstreamed the same discipline has to be applicable to all, in my opinion the fact of the disability cannot be played in only certain situations. Im sorry the family is having a tough time, Im sorry the school Is having a tough time. As the parent of a child with developmental delay severe ADHD and autism I do understand. I hope that this can be resolved with common sense prevailing to find solutions to the problems both sides are experiencing.
