People ask me all the time about how you can know youre good - TopicsExpress

People ask me all the time about how you can know youre good enough to start (insert x here - usually blogging or writing programming). Personally, I think that simply because youre asking that question, it shows youre leaps and bounds better than most. From the start, youre showing youre concerned about quality of your work moreso than just putting something out there to make a quick buck. I think the best thing to do is just dive in head first. If you wait until you know everything until you start DOING something, either: 1. You will never ever start. 2. Youll start when you think you know everything, which is even worse, because that means youre no longer aggressively trying to improve. If youre constantly trying to improve, you will never think you know enough. And thats exactly how it should be. Besides, knowing a lot doesnt mean much if you dont know how to apply it. The best looking plans can go up in flames when you apply them to real live human beings who may not be within the means and standard deviations youve seen in the research. Knowledge is vitally important, but troubleshooting is even more important. If you want to try something, give it your best shot, learn more, ask more questions, evaluate results, and improve. Youll probably suck the first time you try anything. The sooner you come to terms with that, the better. Improvement comes with practice. Improvement comes with curiosity. Improvement comes with NOT thinking youre good enough right now. So its the people who dont think theyre good enough who need to start doing. If you cant look back and find a bunch of things in the past year that you could have done better, and at least a few in the past month, youre doing your clients or your readership a disservice. Do. Learn. Improve. Do better. Repeat.
