People bash Common Core because they dont know what it is, and - TopicsExpress

People bash Common Core because they dont know what it is, and people fear what they dont understand. It is simply a set of standards on which teachers are to base their objectives. The reason there has been so much confusion is because schools and school districts are attempting to use Common Core to control the classroom--to micromanage. That is the exact opposite of how it is to be used, however. Common Core is designed for the teachers themselves to create ways for their students to learn whatever material THEY CHOOSE in a constructive and critical way in order to meet the objective THEY BASE on a standard. These people posting pictures of Common Core homework do not understand that there is no such thing. Either the teacher chose to teach them that way, or the school/school district is misusing Common Core and made the teacher teach that way. If I have had a conversation with anyone recently about this, Im not doing this to rekindle the same dialogue with you specifically. Im posting this because I became involved this morning in a discussion with other teachers/teachers in training about how we have to MULTIPLE TIMES A DAY explain Common Core to people. It is annoying...so annoying...to scroll through my feed and see people saying things and posting things about the school system that are 1) absolutely not true and 2) being posted because people dont understand #1. For instance, Im in the schools on a regular basis. Guess what! They still say the Pledge of Allegiance...with under God still in it and everything, so also stop posting that gem. Now, without further ado, Im linking two things. The first is Common Core. You can check it out and see the big bad monster for yourself, and the second is Mississippi Frameworks. For those of you who are not teachers and dont know what Mississippi Frameworks is, it is Mississippis personal list of standards that are to be used in the same way. If youll notice, they are worded differently, but they match up nearly exactly. Care to guess which we were using before Common Core? Ill go on and ruin the surprise...Mississippi Frameworks, which...to reiterate...is nearly exactly the same. Have a nice day, everyone! Love to educate. =) (Frameworks is in the comments.) corestandards.org/read-the-standards/
