According to Ethiopian police reports, three lions rescued a 12-year-old girl from abductors who wanted to coerce her into marriage. The lions are said to have chased off the kidnappers and guarded her until relatives and police traced her in a remote corner of Ethiopia. The girl had been held captive for seven days, as they beat her forcing her into committing herself. This is when the lions are said to have had enough and chased the men away the protected the girl for half a day before she was found by the police and relatives. These are the words of one officer, a Sergeant Wondimu Wedajo, on phone from the provincial capital of Bita Genet, some 560 km from the capital Addis Ababa. ‘They stood guard until we found her and then they just left her like a gift and went back into the forest,’ he said, adding that he didn’t know whether the lions were male or female. - bz
