People dont realize the unifying and homogenizing effect armies have on the nations that they are a part of. How did the ancient Persians integrate the diverse peoples of their extensive Empire? They recruited them into the army. How did the Romans integrate conquered peoples? They recruited them into their army auxiliary forces. How did the British and other imperial powers integrate colonial subjects? They recruited them into colonial armed forces. When did Americans most see themselves and each other as Americans instead of some sociopolitical tag? The War of 1812, the Civil War, WWI and especially WWII What we need is a nation with a larger, more important armed forces (preferably with universal conscription), in addition to a large, nation-rending war with a clear enemy that commits the entire nation to a war footing. See how fast racism and alarmism over immigration tapers off.
