People my age often talk about their childhood as being the last - TopicsExpress

People my age often talk about their childhood as being the last one spent in utopian innocence highlighted by lazy, carefree summers. The time before jam-packed schedules, playdates, code words, the boogie man and bad behaviour left unchecked. A time when houses were open to all, mealtime often included other kids and all children were disciplined by all parents - for better or worse. Donny and have endeavoured to foster that vibe whenever possible; our door is always open, shoes left on in the house don’t matter, the furniture ain’t grand so bounce away, blast the stereo, raid the snack closet, swing in the hammock, leave your bikes on the lawn and if the basketball bounces off the car no one is in trouble. This summer, the kids hooked up with a crowd of kids of like-minded parents and they have had a ball. They didn’t have to be anywhere at anytime, they slept late and stayed up really late, they went to the movies in big groups, roamed the neighbourhood in packs and came home scraped and tired. Fabulous. So, when I came home today I wasn’t surprised to find the house three times as busy as it was when I left an hour before - bikes were strewn across the lawn, shoes filled the vestibule and there was a dance contest going on in the living room which morphed into a basketball tourney in the driveway. Love these neighbourhood kids being here filling my house with noise and mess. Truly!
