People often ask me about working in Bali and what are the legal requirements. A KITAS is a compulsory visa paid annually, allowing you to stay in the country and work. It also allows you multiple entry, so you can fly out when you like and return without having to pay VOA or any other visa. We still have to pay a departure tax each time we leave, however, one of the bonuses is sailing through the KITAS holder counters upon arrival and not having to queue. My understanding is this is the only legal way you are permitted to be employed within Indonesia. Common sense prevails, if you do not want to find yourself in trouble, dont take the risk of working on a tourist visa. We have all seen the Border Security programs in Australia, and it is not rocket science understanding immigration law and how it applies in Australia. We still need to respect the rules and regulations of the country we chose to reside in. For further information on obtaining a KITAS and the cost involved, speak to a professional agency such as Bali Expats Services, there are plenty around to chose from...just make sure they have a license to trade!!
